1. Program Overview

After a 90-day mandatory licence suspension, drivers with an IRS FAIL violation can resume driving using an ignition interlock device:

First offence: 12-month interlock period

Second: 36 months
-
Third or more: Lifetime requirement (possible review after 10 years)

2. Eligibility & Application

You may apply within 30 days before your minimum suspension ends.

Must be an Alberta resident and not serving any other suspensions.

Before applying:

First-time offender: Complete the Planning Ahead course.

Repeat offender: Complete the IMPACT program.
-

Submit the completed application at an Alberta registry agent and pay the $209 Alcohol-Related Reinstatement Fee (subject to change).

4. Process Flow

Pay $209 reinstatement fee and complete required course (Planning Ahead or IMPACT).

Apply at registry; submit application to Driver Monitoring & Compliance.

Upon approval, get ignition interlock installed through Smart Start Canada.

Present installation certificate to registry to obtain a restricted license that only permits driving with the interlock device.

After completion of the interlock period, schedule device removal and reinstate your full licence.
